We lost power for many hours and afterwards my home server was dead. Data loss, too. Until this week I am still restoring services and data! It is tiring. [01:23] schestowitz This month, in general, has been very busy as Rianne works on her naturalisation tests. [01:23] schestowitz Next month Rianne will send the application, so it'll still be very busy for us. Until October. [01:23] schestowitz On top of this, I'm migrating two very large sites of mine and ours, one of which is 18+ years old (Tux Machines). It's a long process. It can take many months. [01:23] schestowitz So I've been very tight with time and not in the mood for arguing about something regarding next year. I had more urgent matters to deal with, such as data loss. [01:23] schestowitz I hope others, who do not run their own servers and sites, can somehow related or at least understand. I don't have "colleagues"; I work 100+ hours a week and all responsibility is with me, 24/7. [08:19] schestowitz[08:19] schestowitzLuckily, computer scientists solved the second issue many decades ago. There are several transmission protocols that utilize tricks like parity bits and handshakes to ensure synchronicity. Ivanov was able to utilize those techniques for half-duplex laser communication with his custom hardware setup. That hardware consists of two Arduino Nano boards (one for each side of the communication), two red 650nm [08:19] schestowitz solid-state laser diodes, and two photoresistors. Ivanov wasnt able to overcome the slow transmission time there is no overcoming the physics of standard photoresistors and Ivanov didnt want to switch to more expensive photodetectors.

[08:20] schestowitz[08:20] schestowitzAC (alternating current) meters are useful tools for measuring power draw. One might use an AC meter to monitor the power consumption of their devices and appliances with the goal of lowering their energy bill. Makers in particular can benefit from AC meters to learn about the power consumption of their own projects. Basic AC meters are cheap and easy to find, but they dont measure inductive loads [08:20] schestowitz accurately. This DIY high-precision digital AC meter can handle inductive loads.

[08:22] schestowitz[08:22] schestowitzThe end-to-end principle is a design pattern used in the early Internet that suggests that
[08:22] schestowitzSpecific application-level functions usually cannot, and preferably should not, be built into the lower levels of the system the core of the network.
[08:22] schestowitzIt was formalized in a 1984 paper, End-to-End Arguments in System Design, by Saltzer, Reed, and Clark. The paper uses an example of securing a file transfer between two computers. There are many steps during the transfer where the file could get corrupted or lost. Should the network be responsible for error checking, de-duplication, ordering, and crash recovery? The end-to-end solution solves this problem [08:22] schestowitz at the end node a simple checksum at the source and destination.

[08:22] schestowitz[08:23] schestowitzTwo days of just stuff about the Raku Programing Language at the second Raku Conference this weekend. Online only, alas. Hopefully in person next year! Ah, and if you would like to give a lightning talk, theres still room for that! And dont forget to register if you havent already!
